Cappadocia is the ancient and modern name of a remarkable region located in Central Anatolia. The name Cappadocia is believed to derive from Persian (Chatpa-tuka: Land of beautiful horses). Millions of years ago, when volcanoes in the region were active, erupting lava covered all the previously formed hills and valleys, creating a high plateau. This newly formed plateau consists mainly of tuff (soft rock) and rare basalt (hard rock) layers. The erosion of tuff and basalt layers due to heavy rains and melting snow and sudden temperature changes has been ongoing for thousands of years and continues to this day.
